dear MOPOers

just want to share an email I received received recently from a customer. A
strange thing - imagine you receive tube with poster, you paid about $600 for
and you don't open it for 10 years....

here it is:
"
It has probably been about 10 years since we briefly communicated regarding an
ebay auction.

About a decade ago, I purchased an original Polish poster from you for Alfred
Hitchcock's "Spellbound". At the time, I sent a wire transfer and you sent the
poster which I received in the mail. If I'm not mistaken, you sent a followup
email asking whether I had received the poster in good order and I had replied
that I had indeed received it, but truth be told, I hadn't opened it yet.

I had always planned to save the poster in its shipping tube / packaging that
you provided until the next time I moved so I could hang the poster in a place
of distinction. As a result, I decided to leave the poster sealed, in its
mailing tube, without ever opening it up to disturb its contents.

Well, it has been approximately ten years and I haven't moved yet and the
poster has remained in there all that time. Over the years, I would look at
the shipping container you provided and wonder what the poster looked like, but
I never opened it, because I thought it would be better protected in its
shipping tube.

In any event, a few weeks ago, I came across an article by Sue Heim at
Hollywood Poster Frames.

http://www.hollywoodposterframes.com/index.php?p=page&page_id=protect_investment

I was surprised to learn the following...

"it is still important to never put a non acid-free product behind your poster.
Paper is very absorbent and will absorb the acid out of cardboard or the like
very quickly, leaving you with a yellowing and brittle poster. "

I was horrified to think that I could be doing more harm than good by keeping
the poster in its cardboard tube all these years. Seeing as I live in
Hollywood, I took the poster over to Sue that weekend (still sealed). I
explained the situation to Sue and we both thought that the poster had probably
suffered considerable yellowing by leaving it in the tube for the past ten
years.

So you can imagine how surprised we were when we finally opened the tube. I
cannot tell you how perfectly preserved the poster was thanks to your careful
attention to detail. It was obvious that the poster had no damage at all
thanks to the fantastic materials you used. There was a plastic tube inside of
the cardboard one and several layers of protective materials. Sue and I were
both convinced that the poster had been perfectly preserved thanks to your
wonderful care.

I cannot communicate how happy I am and I just wanted to write you to say THANK
YOU.

It may be 10 years late, but I wanted to tell you that if it weren't for the
loving care that you showed in packaging the poster, I probably would be
kicking myself right now for not opening the mailing tube sooner.

The poster is now framed, properly preserved, and I am extremely thankful to
you for the care you showed in its delivery ten years ago.

"

End of quote
And one warning - about two years ago i stopped using acid free paper for
packaging so if you bought something from me recently, just pull it out from the
tube when you get it

Best,

Krzysztof Marcinkiewicz
