Irv made me think how we used to make catalogs...
well befor computers we would get offset printers and the layout we had
to job out to a type house.. they used these large compuset machines
that out puttered the type on a strip..
then we would put on a waxer that woulld make it positionable and
stiky.. then as a Grid
we used Blue paper as It wouldnt photograph the Lines...
keylining was the job of doing the paste up...and positional all the
type,, then for the picture we would get 1/2 tones made withe the dot
matrix in it so it would print,,,
wwe would use Large stat cameras on rails that would take up a room and
we would take the photo and then reduce down and paste in the page...
then the whole page was shot and a metal plate was made... then they
printed it,,, the cost to do One line of type could cost 10.00
or roughly 100-200 per page just doing the art and layout... so a 30
page catalod was like 3000 in type cost ten the printing cost annd we
would do typical 10,000 run catalogs
so it could be like ^ K all said and done for a Black and white catalog
Now yo con do it all On a imac no equipment needed :)
and email te file to a digital plateless pprinter
Boy times have changed
