All reality shows are somewhat "staged".......but I would think everyone
already knows that.

Those guys on American pickers are very annoying, but I watch it anyway.

I watch Pawn Stars......love it..........but I went to Vegas a few weeks
ago and went down to the actual pawn shop where it is filmed.......I had to
wait about an hour to get in as they were filming......and what a dump that
place is (yes, it is a typical dirty and pretty small pawn shop).....half
of the store space was devoted to t-shirts, hats, mugs, and other tourist
crap featuring the guys on the show. What a disappointment. I wanted to buy
that big Jim Morrison painting they have that you see on all the
shows.....but it was 20k so I passed.

Antiques Roadshow......last year they came to Phoenix, I applied for
tickets and got 'em, so I took my mom.
We had no idea what her vases were worth. We figured maybe a thousand
dollars or so at the most. As soon as we took them out of the box, the
appraisers eyes lit up (he was from Heritage coincidentally)...and he said
"would
you like to be on television?". He then said "I can tell you now off camera
what they are worth, or we can film the segment and I can tell you on the
air". So my mom was freaking out and all nervous for about an hour while they
got ready to film her segment. So while I waited in the green room they
filmed my mom and her vases. They explained to us that she may or may not
make the final cut of the show. She did. Here is the link:

Bruce -

I've only watched that show a couple of times. Personally, I find the two
of them rather grating so I don't watch. I wondered the same thing about
their turnaround on items. I sincerely doubt they make money on half their
stuff. I wonder how much buying is allocated in their TV production budget.
Maybe none but it made me wonder.

But I think you're missing the bigger picture...

Now that they're on television, regardless of their knowledge, they're
considered experts by the general public.

Politicians (Sarah Palin), Self-Help people (Dr. Phil), junk collectors
(Pickers) and let's not forget the genius folk of JERSEY SHORE, no better
than you or I, are now leaders in their fields and social arbiters thanks to
reality TV and the mindless sheep that accept them...

Subject: [MOPO] What do you think of American Pickers?

I am no fan of Antiques Roadshow, as many of their "experts" are anything
but, and many of the items they "discover" are likely planted and
rehearsed, and of course there have been several cases of fraud and wild
mis-identifications (repros identified as originals, etc). See

   for an article on this.

Recently I got a chance to sit down and watch a bunch of episodes of
American Pickers, and I came away with a similar sense of "unreality". These
guys seem to always pay a somewhat fair percentage of retail, even when the
people they are buying from have no clue of value. Everything is like "they
paid $60, they can sell it for $100". You never see them make a "score" (buy
something for pennies on the dollar), unless it is something they claim
they know nothing about when they buy it. Not once do you see them privately
say "This item is worth $1,000, but I can tell these people have no clue,
so I am going to offer $50". Sometimes they drive 1,000 miles and then buy
three items and make a couple of hundred bucks? Hmmm....

The show is entertaining, and the two guys are personable, but they are
nothing like any of the real pickers I have encountered over the years.
