Earl... That is great to hear about the River Oaks. I will be in Houston for 9 days starting this Sunday and I will definately have to track it down. It would be great to visit it and catch a film there.

The downtown Ritz/ Metropolitan has been refurbished but is now used for an event venue. The Capitan in nearby Pasadena was recently refurbished to its 1949 glory, but it, too, serves as host to conferences, weddings and the like. Some vintage theatres still stand -- The Granada, The Garden Oakes, The Stude, The Don Gordon, The North Main -- but are either empty or are being used for purposes other than movie theaters. Most often, they have been converted to churches. None of the downtown palaces -- The Metropolitan, The Loew's State, The Majestic, The Delman or The Kirby -- have survived the wrecking ball. Despite claims to the contrary, Houston is not a city that values its history at the expense of progress or profit. On the subject of old theaters, I thought MOPO members might enjoy my 2009 blog about my favorite Houston theatre, The Joy. No downtown palace, the Joy left us nearly a half-century ago, replaced by a large, empy patio between two tall buildings. The open area offer mute testament to the city's lack of concern about its film heritage. http://captainbijou.com/inc_captainsblog-9-15-2009.php I heartily reccomend David Welling's throughly researched book, CINEMA HOUSTON, for anyone with an interest in the past picture palaces that once were so plentiful here.
