*The original announcement of the first Christie's all-movie poster auction
(the 1st ever from a major auction house) from 1990, over 20 years ago!*

Way back in early 1990, I, Bruce Hershenson, approached the famous Sotheby's
auction house with a proposal to have an all-movie poster auction with a
full-color catalog I would publish myself. They had held a few very
successful all-animation cel auctions before that, but the head of the
collectibles department turned me down cold, for he didn't think there was
much interest in movie posters (he offered to let me add a section to a
forthcoming "general collectibles" auction).

Instead I went to Christie's, and they accepted my proposal. I had been
consigned an incredible collection from a theater owner started in the
1920s, and the auction would be composed of half items from that collection,
and half of items purchased by a group of investors over the past year.

I published the catalog in October (the auction was held December 11, 1990)
and I solicited orders for the catalog in September, at the pre-publication
price of $15 postpaid (it cost $20 plus shipping once it was published).
Here is an image of the letter and ad for that first auction catalog,
Hollywood Posters I, which I sent to my entire mailing list:*
