The photo links back to Life.com - with the May 1, 1945 date.

I had to post those 3 links into a diff browser to see them
snapfish in particular is one of those cookies laden sites I lock out and once
it kept going in circles, I stopped checking the other links so I didn't see
those 2 other shots

they could very well be from the same shoot and she does have the same hairdoo,
however it is obvious that the hairdoo on her is easily replicated as she has
the same doo standing next to the drawing. Also, there is no way to attribute
the photo of her in the blouse to Life without getting a copy of the magazine
and seeing if the striped blouse photos appear. I can say from experience that
any photograph I have ever seen attributed to Life magazine has their stamp on
back, so the photo would not be from their own archives, though it could be
from the studio or from the photographer's files

i still recommend any of the sources I cited for research to get closer to any
specific answer and that while you can probably say the photo is from that time
period, that there isn't anything that gives it specific attribution

Rich,

I have linked to striped top pics.

This pic:

Surely from the same session as the pic in question:

http://www.lewiswaynegallery.com/img/_categories/_images/Entertainment_Items/Celebrity_Photographs/3416.jpg

And the sketch in this next pic (dated May 1st 45), is based on the first pic,
so must be later:

http://www.snapfish.com/Life/fe/p/ext/life/LifeCom?q=image_source~LIFECOM^image_id~50372293

So, the shot in question has to be prior to May 1st 45 surely?

I can answer some of these questions

#1 she did not wear any such blouse in To Have and Have Not (I watched it last
week)
#2 she did not wear any such blouse in the Big Sleep (I am the Raymond Chandler
poster collecting King you know)
#3 none of the photos linked by Richard Evans show Bacall in said striped blouse
so
#4 as a result, any identification of said photo from any specific film or
period is purely conjecture

Rob, the feeling I get is that you want to attribute this photo to a specific
film or period for which you have little or no evidence at all, as such,
attempting to make any attribution without certain evidence is a dis-service to
any customer and I do not think that your boss Jim Halperin would ask you to
claim the photo is anything other than what is certain - that it is a vintage
photograph of Lauren Bacall from an unspecified film or unspecified period and
that in order for you to attribute it to anything, that you must do
considerably more detective work before making any concrete or even general
claims that is anything other than a photo of Lauren Bacall

I recommend, if you happen to be in the Los Angeles area, to stop by Eddie
Brandt's Saturday Matinee, Roger Sapps Bijou Collectibles or even Larry Edmonds
where you can physically cross reference the photo with some of the best
archives of Hollywood Photography available.
I can also suggest the UCLA archives or the archives of the Academy of Motion
Picture Arts and Sciences which also have huge archives of Hollywood
Photography. Until such investigations can prove without any doubt what year or
film the photo is from, there is nothing shown here that proves it is anything
more than a  Hollywood Glamour photo that isn't connected to any film or
specific time period

speaking as a historian of the medium of course.

No doubt that sketch is based on the pic from that series, and the photo
showing the sketch was according to LIFE taken on May 1 1945 at her suite at
the Gotham Hotel NY.

http://www.snapfish.com/Life/fe/p/ext/life/LifeCom?q=image_source~LIFECOM^image_id~50372293

If it was specifically shot for a particular title, couldn't The Big Sleep come
into the mix?
Although not released til 46, shot 44-45 I believe.

Though, when they were polishing Betty into Lauren, wouldn't WB have been
likely to have taken plenty of shots, not necessarily specific to anything?

Another pic from series here, this time with her cocker spaniel:

I disagree Robert

we don't know anything because it isn't strictly indentified to anything
personally I think it looks like her from 1948-1953

it would be a dis-service to any potential buyer to indicate anything without
verifiable proof

until the image is properly attributed by proof of other evidence, it can't be
particularly attributed to any film

That you very much.
As Bacall's second movie, Confidential Agent, was released late in 1945, then
this photo (by Bert Six) was more than likely used to promote her first movie,
To Have and Have Not(?).

I also saw another shoulder-up image with that top but was a publicity picture
in a celebrity magazine.  Might not have a tie to a movie but just a star
publicity shoot.

She would have been 31 when Blood Alley was released. Don't you think she looks
much younger than that?
Thanks,

I say that a good guess is BLOOD ALLEY, one of the worst John Wayne movies.
