"The Artist" won seven awards: Best Picture, Director, Actor, Screenplay,
Cinematography, Music and Costume Design. The only surprise (and I wonder if
it's an anomaly given that she played a British figure) - was Meryl Streep's
win for "The Iron Lady." (I'm rooting for her in two weeks because it's been
30 years since she won her last Oscar - she's now 62 - and my god the lady has
been nominated 17 times.) I say this because the Screen Actors' Guild (which
makes up the largest voting block at the Oscars), recently gave its Best
Actress award to Viola Davis (very deserved) - and its best ensemble award
(equivalent to Best Picture) to "The Help," a film I liked - that was in my top
10 - but did not feel was the best film of 2011.
