We recently auctioned a heap o' presskits and on one of them, our person who pulls the items when the auction ends, Paul, who really has eagle eyes and is worth his weight in gold, noticed that one of them was actually a re-release (even though it looked exactly like the original in every way except for being marked a re-release in one small area).
Phil immediately contacted the buyer and asked if he wanted us to cancel the auction or if he would still like to buy it for a reduced price (he had paid quite a bit for it). He replied as follows: "Good morning, Phil, and thank you for your nice message regarding this presskit. I must applaud both you and the eMoviePoster team for (a) even noticing the date discrepancy and (b) recognizing the importance of it to a collector such as myself. Most other sellers would likely have just pretended not to notice nor acknowledge their error, and just sent it off as is, wanting to conclude the sale. As you aptly stated, though, a rerelease presskit is not nearly as valued as an original. So, under the circumstances, I would be willing to offer 60% of what I had bid for it. If you find that to be an acceptable offer, please reimburse me the difference and ship it out accordingly. If not, kindly refund me the entire purchase amount as proposed previously. Sincerest thanks!" Phil replied to him as follows: "Thanks for being so understanding. We think your offer is fair, so we will reduce the price, refund you the difference, and get it shipped right out to you. Thanks too for your kind words. Paul - our guy in charge of assembling orders - is our last line of defense for finding this sort of error, and he does an excellent job of it. We are very fortunate to have him as part of our team." So the next time you are thinking of bidding in an online auctions ask yourself (a) does the auction house have multiple employees who scrutinize every item they auction looking for any mistakes of any kind and (b) will they volunteer that information if they find it or do they believe in the outdated concept of "buyer beware" We don't make many mistakes, and when we do, we do everything we can to make things right.
