I had a hard edged, really loud acid rock band called Country Weather
that the hippies at Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco booked as the
opening act for Flatt & Scruggs back in 1968. (See, we had the word
"country" in our name, so....) The dressing room was small and packed
with pot smoking hippies and the Flatt & Scruggs band in their
Nudie-cum-bluegrass outfits. Lester Flatt looked like he wanted to kill
somebody, preferably someone with hair that went past their collar. He
was openly antagonistic. Earl Scruggs, on the other hand, was relaxed,
convivial, and openly happy at the attention and sincere enjoyment of
their great bluegrass by this odd-looking audience. He saw a crowd of
people who loved music; Flatt saw a crowd of hippie scum. They broke up
the following year.
R.I.P., Earl. You shredded, and you were really polite and encouraging
to me, a 19-year old long hair who was absolutely in awe of your picking.
