Yesterday I received an email from Alexandre Boyer at Cine-Images in Paris that
Jean Louis Capitaine, one of the foremost experts on French film posters and
owner for many years of Cine-Images, has died.
I knew Jean Louis for many years. I first met him in 1981 when he visited
Austin and stayed with Walter Reuben for several months. Jean Louis was
charming and funny,
an outsized personality who was enthralled with visiting the outsized Republic
of Texas.
Cine-Images was one of the first poster shops in the world really. I visited
it in 1995, and Jean Louis showed me around Paris.
It was rarely dull to be around Jean Louis. He was always ready to help with
any questions about posters in general and French posters in particular. His
knowledge
was encyclopedic. He wrote books and consulted for auctions.
Jean Louis will be missed.
Happily, as I understand it, Cine-Images will continue with Alexandre Boyer,
who has worked for many years with Jean Louis.
