Hi Rich,

Thank you for your feedback.

We also have around the same percentage linenbacked and were just considering
what’s best moving forward.

It’s a big leap moving from collector to seller and we are learning these
things as we go.

We recently had A Night To Remember restored and linenbacked, initially for our
own personal collection, and as much as it looks absolutely stunning now, we
can’t help but think, maybe we shouldn’t have done it.

My thought process is, that as a non-serious collector/impulse buyer, who wants
a piece for their home to display, perhaps the linenbacked items might be a
more attractive purchase (in some cases), lending themselves well to framing.
Whereas, the informed serious collector will be steered towards non-linen
items, unless that piece is particularly rare (and for whatever reason it has
been linenbacked). Hope that makes sense!

So plenty for us to consider when buying as well as selling.

Kindest Regards

Clare

Clare

if I need a poster and don't expect to see it again, I will buy it on linen
rarely
if I have a nm linenbacked copy, but I am offered a VG unbacked copy, I will
buy the unbacked copy & sell the linenbacked copy that was in nicer condition

Rich
ps. less than 1% of my collection is linenbacked

  Dear Rick,

I’m a relatively new contributor/member to MoPo but am currently having a
lot of restoration work on some of my posters completed in Canada by an amazing
guy, who I can not recommend highly enough. We are so pleased with his work
that we are sending him regular consignments of posters from the UK.

I’d like to know though, from an industry perspective, is restoration/linen
backing seen as a draw or a detractor when considering an investment purchase
(as a buyer)?

  Kind regards

  Clare

Looks like the "touch-up" work an unnamed restorer did to a San Quentin title
card I bought at a Ray Courts show about 15 years ago. Apparently, the card
must have half-disintegrated during its acid-wash process of
restoration...which unfortunately included the faces of the stars. What was
painted in made Bogie look like Mickey Mouse and Ann Sheridan slightly better,
but unrecognizable as Ann Sheridan. It was so horrible, I didn't want to frame
it on my wall or even look at it. Reminded me of the first Mr. Bean film and
what he did with the Mona Lisa. The problem was. I didn't buy the title card
for re-sale. I wanted to put it on my wall as a part of my collection. A few
years later, I sold the card for less than a third of what I hand invested in
it.
In retrospect, I think I probably should have given it back to the restorer
to fix...but after that debacle I didn't want anything to do with that unnamed
restorer. Somebody out there has it, but I truly doubt if it's hanging on their
wall... Rick

Frescoes are the hardest to restore because of the process in which they
were originally created. I can't imagine why somebody let this old lady even
touch it. Although no one authorized her to restore the fresco, when they saw
her painting over it they should have removed her. FRANC
