A couple of days ago I saw an odd movie called *Convicts 4*. Anyone know if this movie was massively cut at some time since it was made? In the print they showed, Rod Steiger and Broderick Crawford were only in one scene each, and Sammy Davis Jr was in two scenes and then all three disappeared as though they had quit the movie, and that seemed very odd!
I also had no clue which convicts other than the lead character were intended to be the "4" of the title, which also led me to believe parts were missing. Also Timothy Carey was in it with a ridiculous accent (it seemed dubbed). Finally, I tried to search for more details on the real life guy the movie was based on, and came up almost completely empty! The movie has massive parallels to a far better movie made at the same time, Birdman of Alcatraz. Just substitute art for birds. But that movie was wonderful and this movie was bizarre. Steiger's cameo could have been cut out from an entirely different movie. He played a guard named "Tiptoes" and in his only scene he delivered a cool explanation on why he was sadistic, and then he completely vanished.
