I was consigned two Dr. No one-sheets for my "all James Bond" auction and one was linenbacked and one was not. Both were in really nice condition, and I listed the non-backed one, and held the other to be listed in my March 2013 mini/major.
Then, I get an email from the owner of the linen one asking why I hadn't listed his, and I replied that it was a duplicate to one had listed. No, he said, mine is the "yellow smoke style" and you listed the "white smoke style"! This was the first I had heard of this, and I bet a lot of you have not either. Here's the story: "Note that there are two different (yet very similar) first release one-sheets for Dr. No, the first James Bond! One of them has a litho number of 62-2004, and that one looks incredibly like the other one, except the colors in the poster are slightly darker, and the biggest difference is that the smoke from Connery's gun is colored a yellow that matches the girl's leg (so that it is hard to realize it is smoke). The other one-sheet has a litho number of 62-2238, and the colors are clearly lighter, and the smoke from the gun has been changed to be white, so that it does NOT blend into the girl's leg! The only logical explanation for this is that the poster with the lower litho number was printed first, and then someone connected with the movie noticed that the smoke was not very visible, and they asked them to create a new one-sheet with different coloring so that the smoke would be more visible (and likely, at that time, they also asked them to lighten the colors, for whatever reason). We have checked all of the previous 1962 Dr. No one-sheets we have auctioned, and they include approximately one half of each version, so it seems that one is not more rare than the other."
