Could that also account for a somewhat more smooth surface and a
slightly thin paper? Stupid thing is that I did not take a snapshot.

Yes. There are also some with no folds. Most often they are from
minor studios. Sometimes the person who distributed the actual movie
kept the posters with them and sent the posters along with the film.
Sometimes someone finds a LOT of these tri-folded or unfolded
posters that were never used.
