I also love the material in Sunday's sale, including the 1943 book from
Grauman's Chinese theater. I further agree with Phil that some of the press
and/or campaign items he cited might be undervalued - because I haven't see
them in great numbers. "John Citizen, U.S.A." - as the original title of
"Citizen Kane" - is a crack-up. It sounds like the title to a Capra film.
Another oddity to me personally is the 1964 "Mary Poppins" comb-bound
book/press kit with a whopping 32 b/w stills that Bruce says was a "Disney
experiment" to get exhibitors to book the film. I've seen many 11 x 17 Mary
Poppins pressbooks and press kits from 1964, but never a thick publicity binder
specific to this film - that isn't a retail souvenir. I imagine the
"experiment" failed because it was too cumbersome to ship binders jammed with
real photos for just one movie.

Also buried among the Poppins items closing Sunday is a trade mag for
exhibitors that has a color world premiere announcement ad. Finally, I'm also
curious about how the auction catalogs will fare, particularly those published
by Heritage. - d.

I love the 1941 RKO book with the early announcement of CITIZEN KANE under the
title JOHN CITIZEN USA.
These are the real curiosites of film history and the studio books, generally I
feel, are undervalued.
Some of the art that appears in them is often superior to the final art used on
posters. One would think that a lavish book just of trade ads
would be a welcome addition to the printed histroy of film. The book THE LOST
ART OF HOLLYWOOD few years ago was good, but there is so much more promise
buried in the
vaults of tradead art that is out there.
