When I got "back in the hobby" in the early Nineties, I bought one of Deke's
catalogs from MCW, I ended up buying one of my favorite posters, the "Invisible
Ghost" with that wonderful image of Bela Lugosi. His prices were were up there,
but I never regretted making a buy from Deke. I had no idea that he and I were
both songwriters until I had known him for a couple of years. We had some great
bullshit sessions on the phone. (My heart nearly stopped when I learned how
much dough he was still making off the Jackson Five! White boy makes good at
Motown.) The last time I spoke with him a few years back was also one of our
best conversations. he remembered me talking about how much i wanted one of the
47 X 63" French posters from "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane", and (this was
months after I had mentioned it!) he found me one in Near Mint+ condition. I
actually repainted my living room to match the poster!!!!
He mentioned being in ill health last time we talked, and this was about six
years ago. We just kind of....drifted apart .
You always assume there will be a "next time". He extended an open
invitation to me to stop by if I was ever in Washington
