You mean like this? According to a couple of "professional graders," the image
below is the best-condition Gilda style B that has surfaced in two decades,
rated "mint" by Bonham's/Butterfield's and "very good to fine" by Bruce. As
the owner of this beauty for many years, I can attest to its "in person,"
nearly flawless beauty, even on linen. Deep rich colors, esp. the purples,
blacks and the reds, nothing dipped in paint. Ralph, I sure could of used your
deep pockets when I finally decided to part with this to reduce the paper being
carried out during our seasonal fire evacuations here in Southern California.
I have never quite understood why this poster does not command a
"horror-title-like-price" - given the universal appeal of this image. Mine
sold for around $25K and I'm happy with what I got - but I would have been
happier if you had been a bidder. But as I say, mine was the best condition
style b on the planet. It's now sitting in some proud fellow's home - where
he'll likely keep it as long as I did. This is the kind of image that explains
why some titles have "lower turnover" at auction - because they stay so long in
private collections. How many Gilda style B one-sheets in decent condition
have surfaced in 20 years? I would guess less than 10. But I'm not kidding
when I say the condition of what was mine, to date - has never been topped. If
it surfaces again with the same distinctive details you see here in this image,
you will have the best of the best with an iron clad provenance. -d.
