He says he and his father worked together in a theater in Lima Ohio. His theater received approximately 2,000 Woodstock Style Cs. Brian can’t recall the exact date but believes it was in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Apparently, these were supposed to be distributed to other theaters in the same chain but never were. The posters were supposed to be given away to patrons but no one took them. The theater manager told his father to throw them away but the father kept them and Brian later inherited them. Brian says he has been giving copies of these away for years. Brian moved to Nashville and has been a theater manager and union stage hand. Three years ago he sold 1,000 of the “best copies” for approximately $1,800 to a Nashville “collector” (who may be Rick Frogge, a local comic book dealer), who apparently resold them to various movie posters dealers, including some shady dealers. Brian says he still has 700 of these posters but most of them have mold. I’ve verified Brian P’s identity and talked to him by phone extensively. Most critically, a newspaper ad from 1972 proves that original Woodstock posters were being given away by a nearby drive-in theater in Lima, Ohio, so his story appears to be credible. The timeline remains confused because these posters bear the LPIU logo, so they must have been printed before 1973 (when LPIU merged into GAU), yet Brian insists that these were being given away in the late 1970s for various reasons (his theater had been converted into a duplex theater, the manager in question began working in 1975, etc.). There was a major re-release of Woodstock in 1979, which perhaps explains the timing, although the re-release poster is substantially different. Perhaps further confusing matters, another Ebay seller (Rick M., mckgraphs on Ebay) in San Francisco has been selling similar Woodstock promotional posters, which he claims his theater was giving away in 1970.
