Guess it is all about marketing - it's smart strategy and should be
applauded.
A client database is a very valuable thing to any business and if you
can collect a database of your target market that you can then market to
then all power to you. Anyway, it's no skin off my nose to sign up and
it's fairly automatic to sign back in each time, specially if you have
your browser set to auto-complete.
Besides, once you are signed in there is always that chance that while
signed in you may make that impulse bid or impulse purchase - so again,
very smart business strategy.
Then again some auction houses offer payment terms to winning auction
houses and others don't, some offer free parking if you attend their
auction in person, others offer free freight for orders over a certain
value and others provide free drinks if just you call in to say hello
(oh wait, that's me).
That said, if I had to pay to have a look inside then it might be a
different story...

Bruce Hershenson did previously state on 31/08/2013 11:11 PM:
I don't understand why so many auction houses make you "sign in" to
see their results. I don't get the point in it. I imagine *SOME
*people register just for that reason, so it may get them a few extra
"registered bidders", but what does that prove? And aren't there many
others who click away from the site rather than register, so how can
that be good.
I could understand this if those sites were charging a fee to join,
because then they would not want to give their information away "for
free". But since there is no fee for registering, that can't be the
reason.
And this is *NOT *just "closed auctions". I also have seen it where
you can't see *CURRENT *bid prices, and that seems even stranger to
me, because maybe people would be encouraged to bid if they saw a low
current high bid.
*So what am I missing?*
