I tend to prefer fix end times. I travel a lot and I don't like entering info on foreign computers or servers, nor do I like following auctions at inconvenient times. I like having the opportunity to set a snipe from my home before leaving. I prefer not having my bid sit out there or to be 'bounced off" of, or even demonstrate interest until the close of an auction. I prefer setting a snipe when that choice is available. ----- Original Message ----- From: Bruce Hershenson To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, September 02, 2013 11:05 AM Subject: Re: [MOPO] Why do so many auction houses make you "sign in" to see their results?
Peter, If doing this IS increasing the amount of bidders for you, then by all means it makes sense to do so. I have thought that letting people see the current bid prices encourages them to bid, but maybe this ISN'T true. How about it MOPO? Should I hide the bid prices on current (and past) items from everyone who isn't registered? I am all for anything that will get us more bidders.. On extended bidding, ALL real world auctions have it, and I personally have found that only VERY knowledgeable bidders like fixed time ended auctions. But eventually, all people learn about sniping, and then most auctions sit at a low price, and then the snipes roll in, so the effect is that you are participating in a "blind bid" auction where everyone gets exactly one bid, and as I say only VERY knowledgeable bidders like that, because it does give them an advantage. If extended bidding results in higher prices overall, then doesn't that make it harder for auctions that don't have it to get consignments? But there are no right answers to these kinds of questions. My business has continued to grown as I have made many changes, and of course I stick with those that work for us, and abandon those that don't. And what works for one business might well not work for others, and vice versa. I would love to see discussions on these and other topics of interest to movie poster collectors, dealers and auctions! Having said that I have bought a lot of posters at emovieposter.com and I can live with their model. Some people feel that the extended auction model benefits the seller. If it does, and there is certainly no comparative data on this, I don't think it benefits them that much - usually. I like the clock model because I can put in a snipe bid and I don't have to watch it -- not that I watch that many auctions play out to the very end anyway Kirby Kirby McDaniel MovieArt Original Film Posters P.O. The reason for the change recently is because I run analytics constantly and what I have found is we have thousands of unique visitors per month but only 1/3 of these are registering, even though they spend an average of 12 minutes on the site each visit. I want to improve registrations and get more people engaged. Since implementing this, our registrations have increased significantly. Regarding your suggestion that it might turn people off, there is that possibility but that doesn’t seem to be the case. So the point is not to ”prove” anything, it is to raise the customer database, which increases sales, which benefits everyone. If it turns some people off, they are not contributing anyway, so it really is a non-issue to my thinking. You have a massive customer database and kudos to you. My business is relatively new and still a work in progress. And to that end, I have wondered about the benefits of having extended auctions. I realize it maximizes profits for the seller, but all of my buyers I have asked don’t care for it. I would be curious to know what people on this forum think about this. We built that option in when we designed the site and could do so and it certainly works well for you at emovieposter. I personally don’t like sitting at the computer waiting on auction end. I typically get zero responses because I post so little but if anyone wants to share their thoughts I would be very interested. -Peter From: MoPo List [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Bruce Hershenson Sent: Saturday, August 31, 2013 9:12 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [MOPO] Why do so many auction houses make you "sign in" to see their results? I don't understand why so many auction houses make you "sign in" to see their results. I don't get the point in it. I imagineSOME people register just for that reason, so it may get them a few extra "registered bidders", but what does that prove? And aren't there many others who click away from the site rather than register, so how can that be good. I could understand this if those sites were charging a fee to join, because then they would not want to give their information away "for free". But since there is no fee for registering, that can't be the reason. And this is NOT just "closed auctions". I also have seen it where you can't see CURRENT bid prices, and that seems even stranger to me, because maybe people would be encouraged to bid if they saw a low current high bid.
