I'm sure you can drop that article in any summer of the past several years and
next year also.
Some big-budget movies underperform, some made money, some stars had a movie
that didn't live up to their expectations, some did just as they expeccted,
they release too many in a limited timeframe, studios need to remember
minorities, and foreign box-office is becoming more important.
Anything I'm forgetting? Pretty standard stuff.

Yes, Sean, overall box office is good, but the big-bloat-blockbuster-blahs has
set in. This is well reported in thepress; here is an article by Ann Hornaday,
film criticfor The Washington Post, reprinted here in the Fort Wayne Journal
Gazette.

And I'm not sure your assertion about what Fox would and would not "green
light" is accurate.

By "disappointing summer of mediocre box office" I assume you mean films to
your taste, as gross receipts themselves are once again on pace for a
record-breaking year (up over 10% from five years ago and up nearly 1% from
last year's all-time record).
And of course without releases like the Croods, and The Heat, Fox would never
green-light a film like The Way, Way Back.

THE WAY, WAY BACK.

I finally got to see this movie yesterday and although it's been out for a
while, it is utterly refreshing. Good cast too. Steve Carrell plays the
UNsympathetic character for once and Alllison Janney is great. All the cast is
good, in a warm and funny film with just enough edge! Liam James
is great as the kid!

So if you're as tired of the bloat the Big Hollywood execs should be after a
disppointing summer of mediocre box office, see this movie. IMDB.pro
reports the budget at 4.6 million and the box office in the U.S. as 18.6
million. It just goes to show that story and talent count.
