Dear Mopos -
Just wanted to acknowledge the passing of a film industry professional who
didn't always have his name up in lights, but profoundly affected my life - and
that of many others.
When I was a kid in North Carolina trying to figure out how to write a
screenplay, I heard about this guy Syd Field who said he knew something about
that process.
The truth of it is, unlike so many people in Hollywood, Syd actually knew what
he was talking about. He went so far as to demystified the process of film
structure to effectively make writing movies possible for anyone with the
gumption to stick with it.
When Star Wars came out - I quit my 3 jobs - packed my car with a typewriter
and a box of books and moved to Hollywood to write science-fiction movies.
Settling just above Hollywood and VIne I walked to the Sherwood Oaks
Experimental College on Hollywood Blvd. (run by Gary Shusett - who also
recently passed).
At Sherwood Oaks I took every Syd Field class there was to take - I was wide
eyed - relatively innocent - and eagerly soaked up anything Syd had to say as
the gospel.
He was a great teacher - and we have to thank our teachers.
He was also a kind and generous man - which can not always be said of the
characters one meets out here on the boulevard of broken dreams.
Wherever Syd is - I trust he'll be getting extra credit for having helped
people make their dreams come true -
Thanks, Syd - you made making movies a reality for me.
