Lewis Collins reached great popularity in the late 1970's and early 1980's as Bodie in TV's The Professionals - the series was a replacement for The New Avengers with two tough gritty agents working for an anti terror/anti crime agency in the UK.
Many people touted Lewis Collins as the next James Bond, Roger Moore was coming to the age of double 0 retirement and a new actor was being sought. Collins emulated Sean Connery and George Lazenby by making assertive demands in the presence of Albert R. Broccoli. Those days had passed and it is felt that Collins dashed his chances of being James Bond. He did go on to make Who Dares Wins, a film inspired by the Iranian Embassy siege.In Who Dares Wins Collins showed his lack of depth for character development and it was probably wise that he was not picked as 007. Unfortunately Collins went on to make a series of second rate actioners and never really elevated his career, although he did team up with Michael Caine in a made for TV drama - Jack the Ripper. Collins was a British Icon from the days of The Professionals and will be sadly missed. He had a charisma that circumvented his lack of depth within the field of acting.
