This broke my heart it was so lovely. I've not had the honor of meeting Richard. I wish them many more lovely years together with lots of love. How inspiring and the posters were cool too. Richard Allen (legendary long time poster collector, co-author of Reel Art, and co-owner of the Hershenson/Allen Archive) and his wife, Barbara, recently celebrated their 70th anniversary! If I were asked to name the number one movie poster collector of all time, it would surely be Richard Allen and I doubt there are any long time collectors or dealers who would disagree with me! Richard was born in 1921, and he acquired his first movie posters in the mid-1930s when, as a teenager he obtained some window cards for movies he had seen and loved. In 1943, while serving in World War II, he met and soon married Barbara, who was around his age, and over the next years they had three children. Richard never lost his love of movie posters, and in the 1980s, as a successful executive at a drug company, he started assembling one of the finest collections ever, which he called the "Carson Collection". In 1989 he co-authored (with a wonderfully talented professional writer, Stephen Rebello) Reel Art: Great Posters From The Golden Age Of The Silver Screen, which showcased posters from that Carson Collection, and which also contained a great deal of written information about movie posters, including many examples of which artists did which posters, something that had rarely been done before. Every collector agrees that Reel Art is the finest movie poster book ever published! Richard had been having his posters conserved (mostly with paperbacking by the most talented museum restorers) and he had them professionally photographed onto 4" x 5" transparencies. Over decades he acquired an amazing collection of posters on transparencies, and in the late 1990s he joined this collection with my (Bruce Hershenson's) similar collection, and together we formed the Hershenson/Allen Archive, which has over 50,000 movie posters on transparencies, over 25,000 of which are one-sheets. Over the past few years all of those 50,000 images have been digitized, and in 2014 we will be unveiling a website showcasing those 50,000 images! In addition to being the number one movie poster collector of all time, Richard is one of the finest human beings I have ever been privileged to know, and his wife Barbara is as well (and is surely a major contributor to the "richness" of Richard's life in every way). I know that many of you reading this have known Richard for many years, and I have no doubt everyone who does agrees completely with all I have written above. Richard and Barbara recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary, and their children gave them a party commemorating that event, and his daughter created a video that was shown to those present, and she also uploaded it to YouTube. I thought that those of you who have known Richard would enjoy seeing it, so please go HERE to view it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_xysuSwKmk -- Bruce Hershenson and the other 29 members of the eMoviePoster.com team P.O.
