Hi Everyone

Given my wife is away and there is nothing on TV I thought I would whack out another tip on how to better improve the way you use the data you get from Google Analytics via your website, if you don't mind of course....

Log on to Google Analytics, go to: Acquisitions/Keywords/Organic

Now...once upon a time the keyword results in Google Analytics gave you amazing feedback on what words/products were driving consumers to your website. Now don't get me wrong, they still do, but the problem is the (not provided) results that occupies (usually) the first line of those results - (not provided) = 4812 visits. Huh? Simply put, it's all about Privacy. Basically if the surfer is logged on to their Google account (be it Google Docs, Gmail, YouTube, Google Plus, Maps etc etc) then when they use Google Search their search data is 'protected' by Google.

Greeeeeat.

So here you are, you have spent a considerable amount of time SEOing your website to optimise its performance on the internet, (after-all a top performing commercial website does mean (shhhh)...money!). Problem is, at least 50% of your Keyword results are stuck inside this (not provided) title and you have no idea what keywords are mixed in there (it literally could be hundreds). There is no 'fix' (because it is there by design), but there are several work-arounds...today I will give you one of them and honestly this is a fix that most website owners (and web designers) who use analytics don't know about...

So with Analytics still open, let's start...

1. On the top menu, click Admin
2. Then on the left menu, click All Filters
3. Click +New Filter

Now follow the bouncing ball...(note: feel free to copy n paste anything between the quotation marks " ")

4. Filer Name: Give it an easy name to remember, e.g. Not Provided
5. Select Custom Filter
6. Select Advanced
7. In the Filter Field (Field A -> Extract A) select 'Campaign Term' from the drop down box and in the box to the right type: "(.not provided)" 8. In the Filter Field (Field B -> Extract B) select 'Request URI' and in the box to the right type: "(.*)" 9. In the Filter Field (Field B -> Extract B) select 'Output To -> Constructor' and in the box to the right type: "np-$B1"
10. In the following four fields select:
    Yes
    Yes
    Yes
    No

11. In the Apply Filters to View click on your website's name and click the button: Add
12. Save.

That's it!

From now on (this does not apply the results retrospectively just from now on) you will get results that look something like this:

np-/product/janis-1975-one-sheet-movie-poster 23 (then all the statistics to the right as usual)

Because this is a work-around not a fix, it doesn't actually tell you what the surfer typed in the search engine to end up on a page on your website but my above example tells me 23 people used a search engine and the results sent them to the page with the Janis movie poster on it. Of course I am not going to tell you how to then use that information (or lack of) to help improve your results on your website, I am sure you already know what to do... ;)

----------

I hope the above has been of help to someone

As always, I remind you that having a website is easy, making it work for you is a lot of hard work.

regards

David Rew
