Howdy all -
A bit off topic - but related to Metropolis.
When I was gathering information on how to build an archive for Fox -
They sent me to the German Kinematek in Berlin.
Nobody archives like the Germans!
They had a special room with special lighting with the finest shelving and lots
of space on every shelf - not a spec of dust to be found - you could have a
heart operation in that room.
We put on gloves and they pulled out a box - and out of the box came a folder -
and out of the folder came a smaller package that folded out -
And there they were - one by one and individually wrapped like the 10
Commandments - the original production drawings for the futuristic city in
Metropolis.
Some of the most amazing and unforgettable images of movie production art I've
ever seen - and probably ever will.
As a further (as opposed to Fuhrer) side note, one of the head Archivists (they
were the sweetest, most dedicated folks you'd ever want to meet) gave me an
interesting insight into German zeitgeist.
He said that Germans knew how to build a great machine, but did not always put
the best driver behind the wheel.
Such is history!
