I thought it time to respond to my own question. So to restate the question, it was really whether any film that you had seen CHANGED your life.
I don’t know whether any film actually changed my life, but there are films which have changed me. I saw DOCTOR ZHIVAGO in the summer of 1965 at the Windsor Cinerama in Houston. I was vacationing with a friend at the Texas coast near Galveston and we drove over to Houston to see a 70mm blowup of ZHIVAGO on the Windsor’s deep curved screen. I was quite moved during the film, and I know that I never saw movies quite the same after that because I had experienced power of a film to move and illuminate. I was at the perfect age to feel the influence of David Lean, and of course his films became life-long favorites. I had seen LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, of course, but I was really too young to fully appreciate it. But ZHIVAGO was perfect timing. I’m sure I have seen movies that I think are “better” in the intellectual sense or in their construction or execution. But few films have grabbed me emotionally and viscerally as ZHIVAGO did on that summer evening. From what I can tell about what others have said answering this post, I think it is often a matter of time and place for the viewer. Did the film change my life? I don’t know. Perhaps it did. But I do know that I never really looked at films the same way after that. So, in that sense……. Kirby Kirby McDaniel MovieArt Original Film Posters P.O.
