Australia Day Movie Poster Auction the world has ever seen...January 26,

*Of Human Bondage (1934) - Original Australian Long Daybill Movie Poster
*Of Human Bondage was directed by John Cromwell starred Leslie Howard
and is widely regarded by critics as the film that made Bette Davis a
star. The screenplay by Lester Cohen is based on the 1915 novel of the
same title by W. Somerset Maugham. The film was remade in 1946 and again
in 1964.
The film recorded a loss of $45,000.
Davis' efforts failed to impress Leslie Howard who, along with other
British cast members, was upset an American had been cast in the role.
"I really couldn't blame them," Davis stated. But his behaviour on the
set was upsetting. "Mr. Howard would read a book off-stage, all the
while throwing me his lines during my close-ups. He became a little less
detached when he was informed that the kid was walking away with the
picture." Bette Davis fully expected to be nominated for this, her
breakthrough performance in films. When she was denied an official
nomination, there was an attempt to make her a "write-in" candidate, a
practice now barred by the Academy.
Leslie Howard who played Ashley Wilkes in Gone With The Wind and also
appeared wonderfully in The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934) in the titular
role. was very involved in anti-Nazi propaganda in WWII, travelling
through Europe to support the war effort. He was killed in 1943, when
his plane was shot down by the Luftwaffe over the Bay of Biscay, and his
death continues to hold a mystery, as does his role in the fight against
the Nazis. Some believe he was working as a spy; others that he knew the
Germans were targeting his plane, yet chose to sacrifice himself to keep
the efficacy of British code-breakers from being discovered. He was 50
years old.
