Keep your hands off Cinevent people. It BELONGS to Columbus.
It was started in 1969 by Steve Haynes and John Stingley (later joined by Arthur Graves) because they loved movies and wanted a way to screen classic films in front of an audience. For you younger MoPo'ers this was a time before cable/video/OnDemand/Internet, etc. made practically everything so easily accessible. It was very difficult to see classic films.period! PLUS I happen to live in central Ohio..and Kirby, you are not properly informed about Columbus. Having lived here since graduating from THE Ohio State University, I know for a fact that Columbus is a major film-loving city with an abundance of venues that bring in nearly every film you'd be able to see in NYC or LA (or even Austin)-The Gateway Film Center near the OSU campus, the art deco Drexel Theatre, and the Wexner Center's theater at Ohio State are just 3 good examples. The Wexner Center often features rare film programs that include appearances by actors/directors, etc. For film lovers, Columbus is a great spot to be in. Then there's the annual classic movie series at the Ohio Theatre, a 1920's restored movie palace, with most films, GASP, actually shown in 35mm. When you're in Columbus, YOU ARE SOMEWHERE. Don't let that old Ramada that has housed Cinevent for so many years, taint your opinion of the City. I know Steve and his organizers have tried valiantly to move the event to a nicer location.and I won't go in to all the details about that effort and why Cinevent remained at the Ramada. (I leave that to Steve if he wants to share that information). Over the years I've grown weary of defending Columbus to those who live in other parts of the country. It IS a cosmopolitan City and really a jewel in the Midwest. We're growing still, a rarity for a city not in the sun belt. So don't be so quick to dismiss this fly-over City. Columbus was in the final top 3 choices for the 2016 Democratic convention (that's not small potatoes) and we are the home of the National Champion Ohio State Buckeyes! So there! He could try putting it in one of the most film-loving cities in America: Austin, Texas. Of course, it would cost some money. But then you'd actually be somewhere when you got there. https://listserv.american.edu/scripts/wa-american.exe?SUBED1=MoPo-L <https://listserv.american.edu/scripts/wa-american.exe?SUBED1=MoPo-L&A=1> &A=1 Visit the MoPo Mailing List Web Site at www.filmfan.com ___________________________________________________________________ How to UNSUBSCRIBE from the MoPo Mailing List Send a message addressed to: [email protected] In the BODY of your message type: SIGNOFF MOPO-L The author of this message is solely responsible for its content.
