Breakfast Before KO… Definitely a beautiful example of a poster. Famed WPA photographer Dorothy Lange took a famous photograph of the poster (I doubt she saw the film to realize it was a comedy not a woeful lament of domestic abuse) that also shows the billboard poster to “Chatterbox” (with Margaret Hamilton), anyone and everyone can download a free high res TIFF of it at the LOC:
https://loc.gov/pictures/resource/ppmsc.00236/?loclr=blogpic I have no idea who the artist was, but according to the 1929 “Film Daily Directors’ Annual and Production Guide” on page 101 (move poster artist 101 ehh?) shows the billboard poster to “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” (I just talked to Lassie Lou Ahern on the phone a few days ago, who was in that film—she’s till ticking’ she played a little boy in the film—way to be flexible) and below the poster is captioned: “Executed by Fred Kulz, Under Supervision of Milton Silver, Director of Advertising, Universal Pictures” Whether or not Milton was still the director in 1936, I do not know either, but it narrows it down a bit. Fred Kulz has some great contributions to the horror panoply of cool posters, so always good to see his name—he is good at drawing Frankenstein’s monster that is for sure.
