I really liked him very much. Though he may well have wished for more theatrical films, his presence on TV shows always elevated them so they felt more like big screen events. I know that he was married to Suzy Parker for many years; he wrote some books, one of which dealt with his life-long passion pro-football. In fact, I think he was even solicited by some teams for his skill as a football talent scout.

His face was familiar to TV viewers in the 60's and 70's due to frequent appearances on the small screen in classic shows like 'Dr.Kildare,' 'Alfred Hitchcock Presents,' 'The Wild Wild West,' 'The FBI,' 'Medical Center,' 'Mary Tyler Moore,' and 'Barnaby Jones.' On the big screen his best roles were in 1959's 'Compulsion' with Orson Welles and Dean Stockwell, 'Escape >From the Planet of the Apes' (1971), 'The Way We Were' (1973) and in Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry films 'The Enforcer' (1976) and 'Sudden Impact' (1983). He also appeared in the original Broadway production 'Long Day's Journey Into Night' (1956).
