* FYI, ranked #2 by the British Film Institute (BFI) as the second-greatest British film ever made - (behind "The Third Man") - a 1945 country-of-origin pressbook from "Brief Encounter," directed by David Lean and written by Noel Coward - will be offered tomorrow (Thursday, 6 June 2019) - via eMoviePoster.com.
* To my knowledge, this scarce post-WWII-era U.K. paper from a classic title - featuring poster images and film production details - has never before been brought to auction. The pressbook is in high-grade condition and was issued after the film's November 1945 world premiere in London. * Lesser-known to mainstream movie fans and poster collectors - original 1945 U.K. paper from "Brief Encounter" is rare - with most U.K. quads, half-sheets and the glorious 20x60 - in private hands or non-existent. * Pitched to USA audiences in 1946 as a "woman's film" - I remember being swept away the first time I saw this 86-minute jewel box classic in the early 90s - which boasts a Rachmaninoff piano score - (parodied later in "The Seven Year Itch") - and was shot in a "film noir" style before the term was coined, e.g., night-time scenes at railway stations, in tunnels, at parks, in theaters, etc., - all in high-contrast B/W with lots of shadows, camera tilts, pivots and pans. I personally don't know more than five people who've even seen this glorious picture - an who love it as much as I do. Actress Celia Johnson lost Best Actress Oscar to Olivia De Havilland for her perf in "To Each His Own." "Brief Encounter" is still available on Criterion Blu-ray and DVD. * Kathryn Altman, widow of director Robert Altman - describing her husband's memories about "Brief Encounter," said, "One day, years and years ago, just after the war, [Altman] had nothing to do. So he went to a theater in the middle of the afternoon to see a movie. Not a Hollywood movie: a British movie. He said the main character was not glamorous, not a babe. And at first he wondered why he was even watching it. But twenty minutes later he was in tears, and he had fallen in love with (actress Celia Johnson). And it made him feel that it wasn't just a movie." -d. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/1677/Mi2EIk.jpg [https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/1677/Mi2EIk.jpg] https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img924/3715/i8t9nS.jpg [https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img924/3715/i8t9nS.jpg] https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/6742/CzbFUv.jpg [https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/6742/CzbFUv.jpg] https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img921/1697/iglOWG.jpg [https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img921/1697/iglOWG.jpg] https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/8027/WLgWkn.jpg [https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/8027/WLgWkn.jpg] Visit the MoPo Mailing List Web Site at www.filmfan.com ___________________________________________________________________ How to UNSUBSCRIBE from the MoPo Mailing List Send a message addressed to: [email protected] In the BODY of your message type: SIGNOFF MOPO-L The author of this message is solely responsible for its content.
