Glenn The biggest problem with these English FOH LCs is telling first release from re-releases! They can even fool longtime experts. *So some of what I write below may be slightly off because I misidentified a few re-releases as original.*
But with that being said, yes, English FOH LCs mostly came in sets of 8. We have seen a handful that seem to surely be from the 1920s, but those could be unmarked 1930s first releases or re-releases. We have had a fair number from the 1930s, but they ARE far more rare than post-WWII ones, surely due to paper shortages during WWII (as was true of all European countries. The ones from the early 1940s are printed on an unusual paper (apparently all they could get), and many say ""Not Printed on Sensitized Paper"" or words to that effect. You might wonder when color English FOH LCs, and those first appear in the very early 1940s and were quite common in the 1950s, for better movies. In the 1950s, some sets of 10 and 12 appear, and Ben Hur had a 16 card set. Finally there is a mystery about some color English stills, mostly from the 1960s and 1970s. They have "printed in Great Britain" printed at the bottom, but they also have NSS information and regular NSS numbers.
