February 24, 1995: The first MoPo message was posted via the American
University listserv.
MoPo turns 27 today—a remarkable feat for an old-school e-mail based discussion
forum. As is my tradition, a salute to those 11 first-day MoPo members: Mahtab
Moayeri, Michael Danese, Rob Ellis, Donna Tschetter, Goh Kai Shen, Evan
Zweifel, George Nichol, Jeff Static (using AOL name Static555), Cindy
Nemeth-Johannes, Adam Ehrlich, and myself. Michael, Rob and Evan are still
subscribed.
Poster collecting has changed dramatically over the past 27 years. While the
Internet allowed MoPo to exist, it also decimated the old standbys of the
hobby. Gone are all the paper periodicals like Movie Collector’s World, The Big
Reel, Collecting Hollywood and Autograph Collector. Gone are the printed price
guides like John Kisch’s Poster Price Almanac and Jon Warren’s Movie Poster
Prices. Gone are many of the in-person conventions like the Syracuse Cinefest
and the Fall Cinesation in Massillon, OH. The Columbus Cinevent hosted it’s
53rd and final show in October, but will morph into the Columbus Moving Picture
Show this May “under new management” as they say. Buying movie memorabilia
changed dramatically, too. No more waiting for those massive (sometimes
handwritten) lists of available items in MCW ads or the next Hershenson sale
flyer with its nail-biting ordering procedure—will my call get through before
what I want is sold? And how many “other” poster discussion groups have come
and gone? Remember Movie Poster Forum, Movie Poster Chat or Movie Poster Talk?
And for you long-time MoPo’ers who could forget the notorious Style-B? All
gone.
The old MoPo FAQ, composed in the early days of our group, is now just an
archive of what was.
No matter, MoPo is a survivor and keeps chugging along. We’ll continue on until
there’s nothing left to talk about, or an auction to promote. 😊 Or until
American University turns off the listserv!
Thanks to you all,
Scott
