Glenn, Like you I really like the historical and interesting aspect.  I am
not talented enough with the painstaking concept of finding the location
and gauging the depth and distance to get as close to the shot as
possible.  Thankfully digital is more cost effective.  One I would like to
see that exists is Hal Roach locations, especially Laurel & Hardy and
Little Rascals.  I know that the scene in Hog Wild on the rooftop putting
up the antenna was in a known location to a friend's dad.  He grew up in
the area, but is long deceased.  These are so good as they would save money
and just shoot on close locations.
