Did Pirsig place himself in a mental institution
or was he directed there?
If Pirsig volunteered, then Pirsig knew something
that was estranged. Pirsig felt something
uncomfortable, wrong, and misplaced. He was searching
within himself and became more confident that
something else was feeding his head with these demons.
Where I work, if the residents become to
out-of-control and we can no longer provide for their
safety one option we have is to send them to the
psych-ward. At the psych-ward they watch TV and play
games a lot. When asked what else they did or did
anybody help them, they all say, "NO". They got pills
and placed in front of the tube. They played games
with others that could play games. It is more of a
break for us, as staff, for they only stay there for a
short-while and then come back. Some get sent to
these psych-wards more than twice.
