One of my all time favorite photographs was the cover of national
geographic, of an Indian taylor, wading in muddy water up to his neck. On
his shoulder in his manual sewing machine he just salvaged form his
flooded shop. the grin on his face, was ear to ear.

Yes the environment is important, because as the say, nature bats last.
Just ask the inhabitants of the Easter Islands.

Modernity and civilization are a double edge swords. On one hand it makes
life good. I sometimes try to imagine a place without running water and
sewage. Food supplies that are dependant on the weather, lack of modern
dentistry and modern medicine.
So the question is, how little can you have and get away with. I did
watch the documentary "guns germs and steel" and it made me aware that
your environment and food supply have a lot in determining whether
society will go on and flourish or simply exist hand-to-mouth
And to put it all into perspective, here a must see site
