Even the cougar hesitates to jump! He recognises the future; he wants to be on the other side. He recognises the past; his memory of what happened to him previously tells him he might not be a able to manage such a leap. He fears the prospect of damage to himself. He obviously values his own life as an individual. But he doesn't have words so he can't say or think 'I'.
Perhaps, in his planning, his sense of himself as an individual is based on his physicality, the sensation and kinaesthetic awareness of his own body.
