An Update: SA: Keep in mind, the Olympics are coming to China this summer. The Chinese government sides with the Sudanese gov't, and the killings by the Sudan gov't on their on people has been into the million. Now the Chinese gov't has their other, swept under the carpet problem called Tibet.
http://www.friends-of-tibet.org.nz/news/august_2000_update_11.html "REPRESSION IN TIBET INTENSIFIED Recent news from Tibet confirms that repression in Tibet has been intensified after news about Peace March to Tibet from India, a resolution adopted by Cholkha sum went into air. The resolution was adopted in a meeting of the Cholkha sum after the announcement of end of their year long Relay Hunger Strike in Delhi. The news about the March into Tibet alerted the Chinese government and the borders with India were being heavily guarded. However, it is not known whether this March will be conducted or not. But the reality in Tibet is growing worse from bad. Some recent arrivals said that the ban on Portrait of His Holiness the Dalai Lama has also been intensified and households are being heavily checked. Some people, who had sought refuge in the monasteries to hide their treasures (His Holiness's portrait), have been arrested and are being interrogated. The monasteries and temples have also come under heavy search for the portrait by the Chinese officials. The huge numbers of portrait have also been burned down in Toelung area, the fire which went on burning for couple of days. The frustrations and irritation against the Chinese government have come to such an extent that many people now waits for armed struggle to starts so that they could take part in it. Therefore, something drastic and strong action needs to be done to make the Chinese uneasy. The recent resolution passed by TSGs is in one way a positive outcome favouring Independence for Tibet. The TSGs must understand that any other settlement other than Independence is never going to give lasting solution to the Tibetan problems. How can we trust the PRC when the defense is in their hand, when Lhasa government is downgraded to local government under the Beijing Central government? We should be clear on this issue if we are really genuinely concerned for Tibet and the Tibetan people. (Independence or nothing else) Sincerely Yours Pema Lhundup" SA continues: Here's a recent news report of the rising violence in Tibet. http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5h5Z6bJwtN_roGSIUQiQnfbf2NkhgD8VID1TG0 SA continues: It's interesting how Bush has not yet shown strong support for the people of Tibet, which if the violence increases and China comes down on the Tibetan people even more, the Olympics must be considered worthwhile for the U.S. to enter. Traditionally the Olympics are represented by differing countries into the host country, as long as the host country reflects the values of what the Olympics are, such as peacefuly relations and good-hearted competition via non-violent means. It will be interesting to see the U.S.'s gov't offical position in this matter as events may change for the worse. The U.S. is continually stuck in economic positions that hinders it's values. Whether this stuckness is embedded with oil and trade relations (China). These issues are surrounded with a web of workers rights, genocide, dictatorships, and/or world economic ties that the U.S. depends upon to keep consumerism up and thus, U.S. market worth its' investment. The U.S. in a trade deficit with China, and China being such a strong world economic player, the U.S., unfortunately, embedded with an economic culture in and of its' own, can't upset the Chinese it would seem, at this point. Much of these issues, also unfortunate, are right in our houses, spurred by us. If only the concept of 'Take only pictures, leave only footprints' would grow and balance this giant's gravity. woods, SA ____________________________________________________________________________________ Looking for last minute shopping deals?
