Excellent Dan, I've collected various stories about using the index card approach (or similar modern metaphors) for organising ideas, but I've not seen this. Thanks for posting.
I have no idea if there is any direct link between this an Pirsig. My guess is great minds think alike - it's a fairly natural (phsyical) extension of the tabula / grid organisation of data since pre-Roman times .... but I'd be intrigued to know.
