Excellent DMB, here's something perhaps more contentious we could even
argue about ... ;-)

The programme actually made the point, but I only alluded to it in my
blog post, about the significance of the library being destroyed by
fire.

At first glance violent destruction of libraries and museums looks
like unmitigated bad news (hence your disgust at Afghan ./ Iraq
episodes). BUT ...

The passing of the library or museum and (most of) it's contents into
the reality of oblivion, but also it's own mythology, has a bigger
benefit to future cultures than if the preserved contents (books and
artefacts) are simply assimilated into the libraries of future
cultures.

Myth is more valuable than books and artefacts. Sometimes accumulated
"knowledge" needs to be reconverted back into myth, to give it "legs".
Discuss.
