Hi DMB, Personally I think there is causation there, but clearly a complex two-way "dependent arising" of patterns, kinda causation.
Interesting also that you use the word "comfort" as the thing that people fear to leave behind, and get stressed when challenged to do so, clearly that is a "conservative" tendency. Joining up those dots further, I'm reminded of the (Welsh) word "cynefin". It was the word used by Dave Snowden (now Cognitive Edge) to name his ex-IBM consultancy specializing dealing with the reality of complexity in management situations. Dave quotes Pirsig in his materials. The word cynefin translates loosely to "comfort zone".
