dmb says: Back in 2000 I was lucky enough to meet a sort of foster son of Paul Newman's. (His name is James and he was dating a friend of mine.) We talked for hours. Mostly, we talked about father/son relationships and about politics. He said many nice things about Newman as a father figure but I was even more impressed with tales of his political passions. I forget the details, but remember being thrilled when James told me about dinner parties at the Newman house where Paul and Gore Vidal would take turns holding court. There were other equally famous people there too, but the idea of listening to Newman and Vidal discuss politics in such an intimate situation made me turn eight shades of green. I would have been happy to just to be a fly on the wall. But for James, it was just dinner. Or maybe he's just good at feigning nonchalance. Anyway, I got the distinction impression that Paul Newman was a man with substance and heart, intelligence and passion. And this was not an act. Yea, the man was cool.
