Hello Z,

Where are you trying to go with this?

Are we looking at this as an MOQ analysis, because some of the terms
seem SOM value laden to begin with?

Some of the terms have multiple meanings and historical senses,
while others seem to have colors and senses in a cultural sense
that may depart from if not contradict the intellectual sense.

so...

let me know...thanks--mel

Subject: [MD] A Semantics Question

What is meant by sophistication or complexity, and how do they relate to the
idea of "progress"?

Does progress exist in any real sense?

Is increased complexity always a step forward?

Is there such a thing as something becoming too sophisticated, so that it
has a lesser Quality?

In ZMM, Pirsig talks about a widening of channels versus a deepening of
them: (help me out on the actual quote please... I know its early in the
book)
Does progress (maybe akin to widening) always come at the cost of
sustainability (deepening)?

One example I can think of is reproduction. It's progress in the sense of
the mixing of genes, (increased complexity) which comes at the cost of
decreased sustainability (only half the parent's genes are passed on,
problems occur in pregnancy, ect).

Of course, species would not be able to survive (sustain themselves) if they
did not constantly change and become more complex. This is because they (the
species) must constantly compete with other life forms which also constantly
progress.

Are these even the right questions to be asking?
What are your thoughts?
