If you look at the illusion long enough you will see that she is not spinning at all but arcing her toe from one side to the other.

I find it useful to think of these three states, clockwise, counter clockwise and back and forth as perceptual attractors. You can do the Gestalt shift between them but you can not hold on to more than one perceptual state at a time without great effort. None of these perceptual attractors is "right" or "wrong" they are just ways that the mind synthesizes experience.
