David to Andre:
I can't imagine a philosopher who refuses to consider any philosophical
question. If we can't define Quality, there must be a reason. Have you guys
already discussed this to death? Can you give me some dates in the archives?
You imply that the "term Quality" means something other than Quality. Where
was RMP "very clear about this"?
That said, what I mean by Quality must be something very different from what
you mean.
Being new here I naturally want to start at definitions, can you help with
references or explanations? -david swift
Hi David,
You are asking quite something of me now but I suppose I asked for it myself
i.e. I have put my foot in it.
Cannot help you with the Archives but read ZMM and Lila and you'll find out
soon enough that we are dealing with no ordinary philosopher here.
ZMM p117 comes to mind referring to Northrop's 'undifferentiated aesthetic
continuum' ,p233 'Quality is an event' not a thing. Also p 241,277...Quality
is not static but dynamic. Somewhere else he refers to beauty (quality)
about which you shouldn't intellectualise because then you are subordinating
it, prostituting it.
Pirsig compares it to the Tao (LaoTsu) 'The Tao that can be told is not the
eternal Tao'. Zen's 'emptiness/ nothingness. Ending ZMM of course with Arete
(betterness,virtue etc).
Lila, Chapter 9, and his reluctance to build out of his entire enterprise a
metaphysics but, try to keep a fat man out of the fridge, an alcoholic out
of the pub...he needed to do it. Ending up with the terms Dynamic Quality
and Static Quality as the first slice of this metaphysics ending up,via
Rta, way at the end of Lila (p418) the much contested sentence:"Good as a
noun rather than an adjective is all the Metaphysics of Quality is about."
In between all this a brilliant analysis and synthesis of all one cares to
value.
Quality is one of those ineffable ('conceptual unknowns') that defy
definition. Any definition of Quality is mu (see ZMM p314).
And David, I may even get some angry responses to this post as I got it all
wrong somewhere.
Welcome to the MoQ Discuss.
Kind regards
Andre
