hi mark, it is something i have been working around lately... the need for men to acknowledge the subjugation of women, the need of women to acknowledge their complicity in their own subjugation...the need for woman - real woman - to take the lead and to help man to live better.
but men need to be aware that they need help and they need to lose their fear of woman - because woman has the power, and so she has been reviled by men through the ages because of this. what is her power? beauty i suppose, beauty and her creative power. woman is connected more directly to the cosmos, the universe is born through her. man is scared of losing control. woman makes him lose control - she represents the dark horse of passion over the white steed of logic and reason....manichaean again, this time plato style. truth is beyond logic and reason. an equation is a statement of equivalency, a tautology. truth is something else. truth is personal; logic and reason are impersonal. "great is truth and mighty above all things" esdras 1 41 (this bible quote is engraved above the main entrance to the university of queensland....the irony is there for those who see it!) in this apocryphal book of the bible the truth is again identified as female....by zorobabel "As for the truth, it endureth, and is always strong; it liveth and conquereth for evermore.With her there is no accepting of persons or rewards; but she doeth the things that are just, and refraineth from all unjust and wicked things; and all men do well like of her works. Neither in her judgment is any unrighteousness; and she is the strength, kingdom, power, and majesty, of all ages. Blessed be the God of truth. And with that he held his peace. And all the people then shouted, and said, Great is Truth, and mighty above all things." so what does this mean? this identification of truth as female? the feminine is passive, receptive, yielding, unconscious, dark, yin....masculine - active, light, conscious, probing... maybe the truth has to be invited in. maybe the truth has to be surrendered to, as it cannot be conquered (mighty above all things). maybe the truth has to be felt....as a concord between the heart and mind. maybe the truth has to be approached gently, respectfully, tangentially...rather than launching an intellectual attack. know thyself the oracle (female of course) at delphi....this is where truth is! in your self. truth has to be identified with. when we include everything in ourselves - tat tvam asi - then we can know directly. maybe that is a good way to describe it - truth is a woman because it, like woman, like lila, is immune to our rational masculinity - our probing. we just end up creating whatever 'truths' we wish to impose on her, obscuring the majestic dominion of truth herself...to our own detriment for whether we recognise her or not, it is truth that governs - ineluctable and perfect. i guess this is why we need myths, why we need poetry, music, art. as renoir said - 'art is a lie that shows us the truth'. ahhh another manichaean malady - truth and lies.
