gav,
No need to apologize, mate. We are all passionate about what we think and
frankly it is easy to get pissed off about it. I agree, we would probably
get along pretty well. I don't drink much any more but it's been a while
since my last fungal sacrament and as long as we don't have to share a tub,
I'm up for it anytime.
I really do understand your frustration. I used to feel much the same way. I
would read people like Russell and Skinner and get all flustered over the
coulda, woulda shoulda. They were sucking the beauty and mystery out of
life. But after years of banging my head against a wall I realized that what
really pissed me off about them is that they were more often than not right.
Pirsig is on the list o people that helped me develop a different aesthetic.
After reading a few books on quantum mechanics and chaos it finally hit me
that pursuing the ghost of reductionism and SOM, these guys had discovered a
world far more strange and mysterious than anyone could have imagined. I
fully expect that other people's experience may vary but that's my story.
I have always thought that if you and I stuck to topics like sustainability
and small is beautiful we would we would not have much to argue about.
But don't sweat it. This is supposed to be fun and without passion and
conviction and even frustration it wouldn't be. It actually would be as
boring as it seems to all the regular folks, who wonder why we waste our
time writing and arguing about such inconsequential issues.
Krimel
---------------------------------------
i wish to apologise for my outburst krimel...and to anyone else offended.
i have been a wee bit emotional, for whatever reason, and i have let that
influence my postings.
regaining some perspective, i realise that however we disagree, this
disagreement is relatively trivial stuff. these words we throw at each other
are an intellectual pasttime and they do not (directly) reveal the true
nature of the individual. sometimes they do offer a glimpse, but this is
usually tangential to the topic of discussion.
what i am saying is that i glean from your posts that in truth i would
probably get on well with you, arguing over a beer or two. i do have respect
for your intelligence, which is one reason i get so frustrated with my
inability to reach concurrence with you.
the reason i get overly emotional is that sometimes the link between the
ideas we collectively hold and the 'objective' social reality 'out there'
becomes so apparent, so vivid. i feel that this forum is a salutary exercise
in trying to convey this idea well - amongst many other things.
therefore i feel like i am almost representing, or trying to represent, the
whole world, the possibility of a humane rational world, a world in which we
are all free and live abundantly. it's a mighty dream and overcomes me
sometimes, obviously.
sorry
