Yeah I thought of you Marsha, especially at the line,
"Overly-intellectualizing relationships is, to my mind, a way of
avoiding emotional involvement. Why can't you guys just BE?"
I watched the whole JT Gatto video last night. Did I mention he came and
talked to our charter school home study program about 12 years back? That
was the first I'd heard of the Prussian system and Horace Mann. Well not
the first time I heard about Horace Mann, my ma used to brag that Horace
Mann was an ancestor. After hearing Gatto, I figured I had some duty in
undoing my ancestor's screw up. But I'd never heard that about Spinoza
before. Deep Ecology cites Spinoza as a philosophical inspiration. Sigh.
Another hero dead in my heart.
But what a fascinating diatribe on the purposeful killing of DQ in the young
- young children, young nation. It could almost make you think there is
some sinister force at work in the world.
John,
I have no knowledge of a sinister force at work in the world other
than our egotistical selves.
The one thing I can say about my late-in-life education, and that was
it gave me the ability to move away from family patterns. And even
the fact that I, a woman, had a brain was a shift away from a family
pattern. My father and his father were Prussians. So while I agree
with Gatto's demeaning of our education system, I hated k-12 (it
bored me to ears), when I was finally ready, it was a blessing.
