Hi All, It's the evening of Christmasday. I have worked this morning and have just spoken to my girlfriend who, in Holland, is on her way to celebrating a cosy family get together. I believe they are going to 'the Chinese' later tonight to enjoy a Chinese diner... . John and Dan sometimes have these 'stories' so I feel at liberty to put one of my own down...why not? I am sitting here on my own with nothing else to do. A coldie beside me and plenty to reflect on...not wanting to drown in sentimantality.
This reflecting takes me to dear Phaedrus of ZMM, around about the time, when he and young Chris, were looking for these beds in the car and Phaedrus had lost all sense of direction, all sense of initiative, all sense of automatism even...Chris had to give him instructions as to what to do and Phaedrus responded...like a robot....a marionet. It was around the time Phaedrus wandered the streets...the neon signs...the dark concrete shadows...the bare ugliness of the products of a SOM intelligence. The super skilled productivity and outcome of a subject/object dominated intelligence creating and shaping this ghastly, inhuman (unhuman?), alienating reality. Phaedrus has his hunt and subsequent breakdown. The quality he has been after for so long...defended to the hilt but which, at no point he has ever understood...reveals itself to him. Many years later he walks the streets of New York. He is a 'celebrity' now, after the publication of his book, and has just collected his mail from his publishing agent and is on his way to closing a film-rights deal with a super celebrity. He passes a pothole in the street, neatly cordonned off with red and white tape, and reflects on the 'underlying structure' of the city which makes, whatever happens above ground, possible. This is a beautiful metaphor reminding us of ZMM and the underlying structure of the motorcycle which, because of this structure...dare I say because of these SOM creations (logic and insight and creativity), has made it possible to carry him and Chris across America. These same SOM products which make it possible for 'the most dynamic place on earth' (LILA) to exist....to be possible. In ZMM, before the Quality insight, there were ghastly shadows of concrete and neon signs reflecting arrows pointing to paradise...always somewhre else. Now, after the Quality insight, no doubt... still concrete and neon signs and arrows pointing to paradise...but now...the most dynamic place on earth. Phaedrus experiences 'the world' differently. The world has not changed one iota! Phaedrus has changed!! Phaedrus has learned to see dynamic quality via static patterns of quality. The debunking process is completed. These Gods have tried to pull anything and everything but haven't been able to get our Phaedrus anymore. He is awake! He sees! This makes me doubt Bodvar's interpretation of the MoQ and at the same time leads me to believe that the SOL thesis confirms it. Intellect is the value of the S/O distinction/aggregate and dominates/is the MoQ's intellectual level. SOM has thrown out paradoxes which sometimes sit there for centuries.They cannot be resolved through application of SOM logic. Zen has its koans (paradoxes) which are used to break the dominance of a SOM/linear/logical intellect. Given the dominant place of Zen given to the MoQ (nothing 'mystical') by Pirsig, I would suggest that the MoQ cannot exist without S/O logic (the 'M ' has given way to the 'M' of Q). The one can/must support the other. The MoQ cannot exist without the support of its parent (SOM) whilst at the same time it is in huge moral conflict (!) with this parent. SOM throws up the paradoxes (because in an a-moral context) which DQ/SQ puts in a moral perspective which explains, enriches...gives insight and a deeper understanding to. Which, in turn allows us to grow, become artful, become wiser...find our own dharma, our small Self, growing more humble in the head, heart and through the hands find response with the big Self... DQ. It appears to me that the emergence of the Quality insight out of SOM is the same as the emergence of the organic level out of the inorganic level and the social level out of the organic level. It is a matter of life and death! A matter of mechanistic behaviour versus DQ/SQ. We are an evolutionary level of morality higher! Yet, Sylvia describing the Monday morning cascade to work as a 'funeral procession' says it all. The SOM path leads to a dead,static mechanical, repetitive way of behaviour. Following what is 'reasonable' even if it isn't any good. If this is not Lockean philosophy derived from Newtonian science I do not know what is... . Frankly,I don't care what one calls this other level...if indeed there is one needed.(perhaps for metaphysical reasons). The dance of LILA with S/O makes for an entertaining spectacle. So dynamic and unpredictable. Just reflections........... . I hope your 2010 will be as entertaining, dynamic and unpredictable as LILA's dance. Peace everyone.
